Migrant flow reaches 50,000 in Italy alone this year

immigrantsboatAnother surge of migrants has brought around 5,000 desperate souls to Italy over just this weekend. This brings 2015’s figure so far to more than 50,000 arrivals registered by Italy.

The latest arrivals resulted from rescues on Saturday from 15 boats which had set out from the failed state of Libya. On Sunday, at least 14 more rescue operations were conducted.

TAP bids may not be high enough

efromovichThe two possible buyers for state airline TAP both submitted enhanced bids before the deadline last Friday.

In the biggest hint yet that the bids may not be enough, the Secretary of State for Transport, Sérgio Monteiro, said on Saturday that the intention of the government is “to decide as soon as possible whether to sell the airline or not.”

Algarve - British kite-surfer seriously injured

kitesurfingA kite-surfer has been seriously injured in an accident at the Ria do Alvor between Lagos and Portimão.

The accident happened on Sunday afternoon as strong winds swept across the Algarve and caught the kite-surfer off guard, causing him to lose control of his kite and fall onto rocks causing him serious injury.

Tesco publishes “probable breaches” of industry code

tescoStories have been swirling for a while, but now Tesco has admitted that it is likely that it breached its industry’s code of practice in dealing with its suppliers.

The admission was made in the small print of its latest annual report which notes there is likely to have been a “number of instances” where it contravened the Groceries Supply Code of Practice.

José Sócrates may be allowed home, if he wants to go

prisoninteriorOne of the lawyers acting for jailed former-Prime Minister José Sócrates has until Tuesday to confer with his client to see if Sócrates will accept home detention with an electronic ankle bracelet.

Previously, lawyer João Araújo has said that this sort of electronic surveillance is not an option for his client but with Sócrates having spent since last November in jail awaiting charges, a change of tactics may be on the cards.

A generation of taxpayers has left Portugal

airplane2Emigration figures reveal 285,000 Portuguese have left the country for good in the last four years: a further concern is that immigration has decreased.

Portugal’s Centre for Emigration reported today that "Over the past four years, the number of people who have left Portugal grew by over 50%. Only in 2013 at least 110,000 Portuguese emigrated. You have to go back to 1973 to find numbers like these."
