4812Drivers who have managed to pay tolls for travel on the Algarve’s Via do Infante will not be best pleased to read that those who did not bother to pay, or found the system too complicated to pay within the allotted period, are to qualify for large discounts.

The formerly free SCUT roads in Portugal, including the Algarve's A22-Via do Infante, were deemed illegal by the European Commission in 2011, yet the government continues to allow authoirsed companies to collect money from drivers, and applies the full force of the state's coercive collection system to non-payers despite toll companies not being government bodies.

Portugal's Press Association calls for unfettered election coverage

newspapersThe president of the Portuguese Press Association, João Palmeiro, today said that it would best that the 1975 law for electoral coverage should be left to "die in peace" and that there should be no law specifically to restrict the press during election periods.

Under proposed law changes, journalists still will have to submit work schedules and applications to cover politicians and election events to a multi-party committee, a process which the association sees as outdated and unworkable in a free society where journalists should be free to cover what they want, when they want, not to be open to a fine of €50,000.

Tourists disappointed as Magaluf goes clean

mallorcaThe resort town of Magaluf is trying to pull its reputation up by new regulations against anti-social behavior, such as drinking in the street, bar crawls and even jumping off balconies into swimming pools.

The measures came into effect today, Tuesday, just before the bulk of tourists arrive. Outdoor drinking will be illegal from 10pm to 8am, alcohol cannot be sold between midnight and 8am.

Passos Coelho denies he encouraged Portuguese to emigrate

airplane2Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho denied today that he had ever encouraged young Portuguese to seek employment abroad, saying that it all is just an "urban myth."

"There are few urban myths, one of them is that I encouraged young people to emigrate. I challenge anyone to remember any speech or written document from me in this regard," said Passos Coelho talking to reporters in Coimbra.
