The General Election must be a victory for British Expats

The General Election must be a victory for British ExpatsHarry Shindler sends this letter to all British Citizens in mainland Europe – End of March 2015.

The General Election must be a victory for British Expats

On May 7th voting takes place for a new Parliament in Westminster.

May I urge all expats, who still have the right to vote, to use that vote and demonstrate that we expats care about what happens in the UK and that decisions made in the UK affect our lives out here in Europe.

Whilst we, one million expats are denied the vote, demonstrating that we have a flawed democracy in the UK , this General election can end our long campaign in a victory.

The Conservatives have announced that they will act to give us back our right to vote if they win the election. This promise is made in a letter from the Prime Minister to the writer.

The position of the Labour party is not clear on this matter, yet whilst the Labour Party fail to make a clear decision, Labour International, as with Conservatives Abroad, campaigns for our right to vote.

So we expect, whichever party wins the Election, to return to the one million British Expats, their right to vote.

But it must be more than a promise. IT MUST BE THE FIRST ACT OF THE NEW GOVERNMENT.

So our Country rejoins those Countries with a full democracy.

So ... you are an immigrant in a country outside the UK, but for some reason you want retain full voting rights in the country you abandoned. Eh?
Shindler did not 'abandon' the UK, he exercised his right to settle in Italy.

He, like many other expats, can't vote where they live or where they came from - how is this fair in a democratic EC system?
I have never missed a vote - this UK election will be my last. In Portugal I can not vote for an MP so next year I will be deprived of representation.

Even the French have worked this one out and have MPs representing their nationals in London.

Shindler is right to complain on behalf of hundreds of thousands of unrepresented Britons. Interestingly the Armed Forces and HM diplomatic staff abroad for 15 years or more retain the right to vote, just not us plebs.

The problem being that most expats are prevented from voting for an MP in their country of residence. After 15 years expats can not vote in the UK or where they have chosen to live, either would do!
