EU wakes up to migrant crisis

4722EU leaders are likely to agree to the creation of a quarantine system for migrants entering Italy, Malta and Greece. A draft document appears to call for “structured border zones and facilities”.

Such areas would allow for identification, quick registration, and fingerprinting.

Foreign population in Portugal declines

vianadocasteloMore than 32,000 foreigners applied for Portuguese nationality in 2014, an increase of 7.4% compared to 2013, according to today's report, ‘Immigration, Frontiers and Asylum,’ but the overall foreign population is down.

The document issued by the Foreigners and Borders Service said the agency had received 32,349 applications with the majority from Brazilian nationals.

Eurozone economy best in years

4562The economy of the eurozone is said to be in the best shape it has been in for four years.

Outside the power houses of Germany and France, growth in both output and job creation was seen to be the best in eight years.

Lamb modified with jellyfish slaughtered for food

jellyfishA lamb which was modified genetically to contain jellyfish protein wound up illegally in the French food chain.

The female lamb, called Rubis, was the property of the French national institute for agricultural research (Inra). She was modified to be used for animal research.

GNR fines campers in the south-western Algarve

caravansunsetThe GNR concentrated its search for campers and motorcaranvanners along the southwest Alentejo and Algarve sections of the Costa Vincentina Natural Park last weekend and issued 22 fines to those not spending the night in designated camping or parking zones.

"The GNR embarked on enforcement actions at several southwestern Algarve beaches which lasted all morning."

Salgado commissioned book on Espírito Santo collapse

bessalgadoarrestThe president of the Society of Strategic Assessment and Risk (SaeR) said today that the economic crisis was half responsible for the collapse of the Espírito Santo Group, with the remaining 50% of the blame attributable to management, the Government and the Bank of Portugal.

The 400 page tome was launched today, commissioned by none other than failed banker Ricardo Salgado (pictured on his arrest).

 

‘Portugal is the best country in Europe in which to invest’ say the Chinese

fosunChina's 'Fosun Group,' one of the expected bidders for Novo Banco when it is sold off by the state to recoup billions of taxpayers’ money, has hailed Portugal as “the best country in Europe to invest in.”

Liang Xinjun, CEO of China’s largest privately-owned conglomerate Fosun, commented in Shanghai over the weekend that “I’m not saying other countries aren’t good, but Portugal is the best. I say this to any Chinese who wants to invest in Europe.”

Portuguese holidaymakers to flood the Algarve

albufeirabeachA survey, yes another one, into the holiday plans of the Portuguese this summer reveals that 52% will take a vacation from June to September with just over half of these staying somewhere other than at home.

The Institute of Planning and Tourism Development which released its survey results today, said that of the respondents who intended to take a break this summer, 53% intend to travel outside of their home area with 47% planning to stay at home.
