Efromovich to present Brussels with reasons to overturn TAP sale

efromovichGermán Efromovich is to lodge a formal complaint in Brussels 'within days' as European rule n.º2407, from 1992 stipulates that only European citizens may own European airlines, including TAP.

The Gateway consortium owned by David Neeleman and Humberto Pedrosa now seems to have overstepped the mark and broken this simple rule.

Chinese smart meters may end EDP rip-offs

edpA hitherto hidden benefit of the Chinese owning 21% of Portugal’s electricity supplier EDP is the current testing with a view to purchase of new ‘smart meters’ from Chinese manufacturer Kaifa.

EDP needs to invest in new meters, the new batch is being tested in Lisbon for three months, but why this has taken 18 months since the current EDP meters were proved to be faulty is not explained.

Loulé council offices raided

Portugal dumps half its waste in landfill sites

rubbishPortugal needs an "efficiency shock" in its landfill figures and water supply losses, according to the Minister of the Environment Jorge Moreia da Silva, speaking today at the Smart Waste Portugal conference.

According to the minister, the country has made excellent progress in water infrastructure, waste water treatment, bathing water quality, the number of blue flags on Portugal’s beaches, reducing landfill, promoting recycling and producing renewable energy – but it is all relative.

Retailers doing better in 2015

shoppingcentreConsumers in Portugal returned to the shops during April and May this year, pushing up retail sales by 0.7% and 0.2% respectively.

While earlier months of 2015 saw sales falling, the good news for retailers is that every month so far of this year has been considerably better than the same month in 2014.

Taxman owed €13.5 billion from last year

financasThe figure is an improvement but the taxman still is owed €5.5 billion in VAT from last year which, plus uncollected income tax and corporation taxes, adds up to €13.5 billion.

The tax take rose in 2014 to record levels, in part due to increased VAT collections, but the year-end national accounts show a gaping hole in the country’s financial position despite the Tax Authority's increasing use of coercive collection methods which yielded €1.147 million last year.
