British MP championing bill to restore expat voting rights

4801British MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown hopes to gain support on Tuesday for legislation that will change the rules affecting British expat voters before next year’s general election.

The rule currently debies Britons residing overseas from voting in UK elections if they have been abroad for more than 15 years.

BES links to Gaddafi through Venezuelan businessman

besBanco Espírito Santo (BES) is being investigated in New York on suspicion of its branch in Miami having been used for money laundering via a Venezuelan businessman, according to Monday’s Wall Street Journal.

The Aman Bank in Libya, owned 40% by BES, also is accused of helping Muammar Gaddafi and his inner circle to get money out of the country in early 2011, before the rebellion ended the dictator’s regime in October that year.

Oil price falls – the good and the bad

Brent crude sunk to $67.53 a barrel, the cheapest it has been since October 2009, but later crept up to just above $70 a barrel.

German renewables company pulls out of Portugal

eonThe German energy company E.ON has agreed the sale of its eco-energy businesses in Spain and Portugal to the Australian investment firm Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund #4  and Wren House (the investment vehicle of Kuwait's sovereign wealth fund for infrastructure) for €2.5 billion, well below the €3 billion asking price.

The German group said in a statement that it had found "a new strong owner for its activities, with extensive experience in the energy sector."

Even Portugal's immigrants are leaving

immigrationThe number of immigrants living in Portugal decreased from 417,000 in 2012 to 401,000 a year later, according to a report from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) which called the drop a ‘permanent decline.’

The summary shows the decline as sustained and that the economic crisis and immigrants taking up Portuguese nationality have been the main factors.

Polar air mass cuts through Portugal
