It's snowing on Monchique

polaqrbearmonchiqueThere is snow on Monchique for the first time since 2006.

The moisture-laden storm from the Atlantic Ocean brough a variety of disruptive weather to the Iberian Peninsula and South of France on Friday and well into Saturday.

The Portuguese weather service was right as the temperature has plummeted and with moisture in the air, its snowing on Monchique.

The roads to the Algarve's highest peak filled with inquisitive trippers keen to grab a handful of Algarve snow, many for the first time.

The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere said that the weather in Portugal will remain bad, but the Algarve yesterday was bright sunny, in between the scudding clouds and hail - the region often misses the bad weather that other of Portugal's regions suffer.

The north and the central areas of Portugal switched to an orange alert on Friday evening as temperatures dropped and widespread snow and strong winds correctly were forecast.

In addition to the warnings issued by the weather service, the Civil Protection agency had issued a flood and high seas warning.

Many local children will never before have experienced Algarve snowfall as the last time the peaks were snowy was in the perishing winter of 2006.

Hail and rain on the Monchinque slopes added to the tension this morning, snow later was confirmed at 12.30 and soon covered the high ground.
