Portugal's courts fail to clean up local council corruption

farocamaraOnly 6% of corruption cases brought by the state between 2008 and 2013 resulted in a conviction.

Between 2008 and 2013 more than half of corruption and embezzlement prosecutions were filed, according to the latest report from the Corruption Prevention Council, which reported that 40% of the cases that come to court for these types of crimes relate to local government and local authorities.

The crime of corruption in local councils accounted for 46.5% of the cases reported to the Corruption Prevention Council, with embezzlement by those at councils adding a further 25.4%.

Isn't it about time - after nearly 30 years in Portugal's case - that countires unable to control anti-social behaviour like local and regional authority corruption, fraud, misuse of power, peddling influence etc etc have the power to 'self police' themselves taken away?
They are failing as partners in the EU project.
Particularly where foreign direct investment is concerned these cases should be automatically examined by neutral 3rd countries lawyers trained up in EU competiton law.
All they need do is judge if 'prima facie' some obstruction to investment had or was occuring. And, both over rule it and award suitable compensation to cover stress and agravation - taken from EU subsidies.
