Organic food fairs take off out west

vegThe 'Viv'o Mercado' project continues to encourage organic production in the Lagos area.

The initiative, which started in April and will run until the end of October, takes place every Wednesday, between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. in the Mercado de Levante Market.

Fresh, dried and processed plant and animal products (preferably of biological origin), and handicrafts whose raw material comes from the land are available to visitors who can browse the stalls, accompanied by an entertainment programme.

"Contributing to increasing organic production and promoting employment in this area by encouraging and giving visibility to existing good local practices and supporting other local producers in converting to this form of production" sums up the aim of the project.

Over in Aljezur, the Council is promoting its Feira da Terra, as from July 7th.

This is a fair of local products which takes place in the Multipurpose space in Aljezur (EMA), on Saturdays 7, 14, 21 and 28 July, 4, 11, 18 and 25 August, as well as September 1, 8 and 15, always from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Visitors will be able to buy natural and organic products, agri-foodstuffs such as honey, sausages and the tasty regional sweet things, as well as vegetables and local and regional handicrafts.

The objective of the Feira da Terra is "to promote handicrafts, agricultural products and economic activities that value the customs of the municipality of Aljezur, thus enhancing the cultural and social values of the region."

Organic needs to mean organic. Portuguese Landowner neighbours of ours happily described to us how they got organic status for their olive oil - "Why didn't we do it?"
From memory the process being, paying 4 hundred euros to the Sativa licensing authority, declaring their land had been pesticide free for 4 years (which they knew well it hadn't been!) and sending Sativa the nutrition values they had lifted off the label for a highly expensive organic supermarket extra, extra, extra olive oil. Signed off without any examination, just a donation towards his next holiday, by a flunkey from a recognised testing laboratory. Ohh ... sorry, forgot - you also need a map specifying which fields are the organic ones amongst all the others that are still being washed weekly in herbicides / pesticides. Who needs bees ..... Another hoot !
