Repairs finally commissioned for Tavira's 'Pego do Inferno' beauty spot

pegoinfernoAfter five years of missed opportunity to restore the Pego do Inferno beauty spot in the Tavira countryside, the mayor has announced that repairs ‘may start later this week’ but, anyway, are scheduled for August, thus missing another summer season.

The wreckage left after the fire, that destroyed the access walkways and bridge to the inland waterfall and pool, already have been removed by council workers and personnel from Tavira Verde, a municipal company.

In the absence of a distinct lack of council intervention, nature has re-greened the area and the mayor says that a contract now has been awarded to a company, although he won’t say which one, to rebuild the access routes.

"The timber structures will be replaced," said Botelho, adding that the start of the work will be “very soon and may even begin during this first week of the month.”

Until the work is done, the council claims that access to the much loved site is dangerous and suggests that people continue to go elsewhere, as they have done since 2012.

The mayor is adamant that Pego do Inferno is not a bathing area, despite having been used as such for countless generations, saying earlier this year that, "it is an environmentally sensitive place and it should not be overused  because of its quality and sustainability. We have to find a solution that can accommodate use and take care of the impact this will have."

We tried to take some friends there a few weeks ago but gave up due to how many people were already there and how many others were also heading there. The surrounding area is disgusting with discarded refuse all over the place. definitely not a pleasant place to go to at the moment.
I don't see how they can charge to go there but they definitely need to take control of the area and make sure it remains clean once the works have been done (IF the works ever get done)...

I live in Thailand during the cold months, so i know the place very well, they have a dual pricing system for all such attractions, parks, crocodile park, lion park etc, the locals pay one fare the rich foreigners pay a much higher fare, its always been like that.

I live close by and like to go there for a dive but stopped going during the day because it's completely overcrowded. Hardly can find a place to sit. And the amount of garbage they leave is disgusting.
I really wonder how they are gonna work there right now during the holidays.

I am not in favor of a charging system and believe in people taking their own responsibilities but the way the place is abused right now is also not the way.
Also it is waiting until a serious accident happens with people jumping of the cliffs. I mean it's great entertainment to watch but will go wrong some day.
So I do agree some form of regulation for the summer months should be thought out.

Could this be political waffle for "we are going to start charging"?

I think that is entirely possible...
