The 2016 Poppy Appeal

The Poppy Appeal is currently taking place and ends on Remembrance Sunday 13th November 2016.
The main Remembrance Service in the Algarve will start at 10.50am on this day at St. Luke's Church, Palhagueira, when wreaths will be laid on behalf of the British Community by the British Consul, Mrs. Simona Demuro, and by members of the Royal British Legion.

The traditional Sunday Lunch at Le Marquis restaurant, which follows the service, is open to all members of the community, €25 including wine, (Reservations: 912 392 618 / 919 055 959). There will also be Remembrance Services at Praia da Luz Church at 11.30am and at Lisbon, Oporto and Madeira.

“At Poppytide the British Community throughout the world keeps the faith with those who died for the freedom that we enjoy today; and the visible representation of that Remembrance is the wearing of a Poppy and the keeping of the Two Minute Silence at 11am on Remembrance Sunday and at 11am on the 11th November.

This year we particularly remember the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. July 1st 1916 saw the worst day in the history of the British Army when 19,240 men died and a further 40,000 were injured. By the end of the battle on 18th November 1916, the official figures show 420,000 British dead, missing or wounded. We remember too our gallant allies, including Portugal, who served in that conflict.

Can that sacrifice and the sacrifice of countless others in the two World Wars, and in all conflicts past and present, ever be repaid? All we can do is to hold fast to the pledge that “We will remember them”. To those who work tirelessly for the Poppy Appeal in Portugal every year, and to everyone who donates to the Appeal, we say thank you – and please wear your Poppy with pride.”
