Should We Have a Right to Fire our MPs?

Should We Have a Right to Fire our MPs?If you work for a boss and your work is substandard, meaning you do not perform according to the standards expected of you, you get fired.

A government is a de facto corporation technically owned by the people of a country and all of us should have the right to hold government representatives accountable.

Why shouldn’t we as voters have the same right to fire our politicians when they fail to perform? Or when they fail to deliver on election promises? Or when they act against the best interests of their communities? (like in the case of the oil and gas exploration matter in the Algarve?)

Should we create a petition asking that a politician’s recall bill be passed in Portugal and in the European Parliament giving voters the right to petition for the dismissal of a specific Politician for failure to perform?

If you believe that we have to put the power back in voter’s hands, so that if, in between general elections, enough voters are dissatisfied with their MP they have the right to petition for that MP to be dismissed and to be held accountable, and for new by-elections to take place, please do let us know.

After all it’s us that by our actions as voters when we elect an MP, we are in fact “employing” him to do a job, then it stands to reason that it’s us that should have the right as “shareholders, tax payers and voters” to dismiss them. Don’t you agree?

Tell us what your opinion is. Should we or shouldn’t we create such a petition?

- I think we definitely should do this, or
- I wouldn’t mind if we ran this campaign, or
- I don’t know enough to decide, or
- I would rather we didn’t run this campaign, or
- I think we definitely shouldn’t do this

So tell us what you think email us at info@asmaa-algarve.org.

We rely on donations from individuals to help pay for the technology, the research, the equipment and the small office we need to organise campaigns.
If you donate in response to a specific campaign your funds will be allocated to that specific purpose including supporting staffing and other direct costs that enable that particular campaign to happen.

Thanks and keep well,

Laurinda, Joe and the rest of ASMAA's team
