Ikea starts work on massive Algarve project

ikea2Despite lingering court actions designed to halt the Swedish giant retailer, the Ikea Group in Portugal finally has started work on its vast commercial project between Loulé and Faro.

The diggers started today, August 3rd, with an unspecific completion date for the Ikea store sometime in 2016 with the surrounding shopping centre due to be completed a year later.

Thousands of farmed fish released off the Algarve coast

aquacultureStaff from the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) are set to release thousands of fish grown in captivity in an effort to boost the populations of those species that are popular with small-scale fishermen off the Algarve coastline.

The restocking operation will take place on Thursday 6 August when about 25,000 juvenile sea bream and sea bass will be set free from aquaculture facilities into the sea, south of the island of Armona in the Ria Formosa.

Lagos council joins argument over Dona Ana beach

donaanaLagos council has entered the fray over Dona Ana beach with the council president considering the removal of the beach's Gold Quality status as “illegitimate”.

The president of Lagos council, Joaquina Matos, said that as the award should be based solely on water quality, so the beach should keep its Gold award status despite recent safety works by the Ministry of the Environment being widely criticised for changing the character and appeal of the beach, once considered one of Portugal’s finest.
