Monteiro's €30,000 a month Novo Banco contract under scrutiny by Left Bloc MPs

sergiomonteiro2The Left Bloc wants to look at the contract between Sérgio Monteiro (pictured) and the Resolution Fund, questioning why details of his €30,000 a month deal have not been published online.

MP Mariana Mortágua has filed a Left Bloc application at the Bank of Portugal demanding access to the formal contract that pays the former Secretary of State around €30,000 a month for a year to find a buyer for Novo Banco.

Salgado freed from house arrest

SALGADO2Ricardo Salgado has managed to persuade the court that €1.5 million of a €3 million bail demand already paid is sufficient inducement for him not to skip the country, and again can move freely amongst us.

Salgado’s house arrest is over and the charade that he could not come up with sufficient funds to pay his own bail seems to have worked.

Wealthy foreign investors no longer keen on the UK

bentleyThe number of wealthy foreign investors applying for visas to enter the UK has dropped significantly in the first nine months of 2015.

In that period, there were 136 applications for special investor visas. During the same period in 2014, there had been 780 applications.

Portimão to Bragança return air fare - €148

portimaoaerodromeThe long overdue air service between Portimão and Bragança “will start soon” according to AeroVIP, the sole bidder to run the subsided route.

The air link now  has the approval of the Court of Auditors and AeroVIP’s parent, the Seven Air Group, which originally planned to start the service in June this year, has a track record of running this route as it did so for 15 years to November 2012 until EC funding stopped and the Government refused to pay further subsidies due to budgetary pressure.

EDP to appeal €7.5 million fine for 'disadvantaging' the already poor

edpThe electricity regulator has condemned Portugal’s electricity supplier EDP for failing to supply energy on the low ‘social tariff’ which should be helping 500,000 of Portugal’s poorest families.

EDP Comercial announced today that it will appeal the fine of €7.5 million imposed by the regulator.

 

Lawyer for ripped-off BES depositors returns from Brussels with renewed hope

besThe lawyer acting for the association of those affected by the collapse of BES, they claim to have been mis-sold worthless ‘commercial paper’ in Espírito Santo Group companies, today met with representatives of the European Commission and reported that his team returns to Portugal with "renewed hope."

Nuno Vieira said today in Brussels, "We leave here satisfied because topics that are prohibited to discuss in Portugal were spoken of here today, namely confiscation and breach of trust. We needed to travel thousands of kilometers to be able to speak openly about a topic that in Portugal we cannot talk about."

Novo Banco contender detained by Chinese police

fosunGuo Guangchang, the chairman and main shareholder of the Chinese company Fosun has been arrested on charges of corruption. In Portugal, Fosun owns the major insurance company Fidelidade and the Luz Saude health group.

The company also was a contender for the purchase of Novo Banco, the sale of which was pulled earlier this year by the Bank of Portugal as the current market price was several billion euros below the figure needed.

Algarve's new promotional video 'Share the Secret'

riaformosaA new promotional video has been launched by the Algarve's tourist board to be used at the coming year's tourist trade fairs, BTL and FITUR.

‘Algarve – Share the Secret’ is narrated in Portuguese by the actor Diogo Infante and aims to encourage tourists to 'spread the word' about Europe's 'most famous secret.'
