Chinese cops to patrol in Italy

italy3Chinese police are being sent to the streets of Rome and Milan in an effort to crack down on the Asian crime syndicates operating in Italy.

The gangs are thought to be behind counterfeit goods, drug trafficking and extortion.

Italian police are hoping that working with colleagues from China will lead to improved relations with the Chinese communities in Italy and more information about criminal activities.

Milan and Rome have the largest number of Chinese residents, an estimated 28,360 and 16,099 respectively, out of a total of some 266,000 across the nation.

Social integration between Chinese, even second-generation, and Italians is reported to be low.

Two Chinese officers will take part in an initial two week experiment which may be rolled out in future.

It is classic Portuguese nonsense to imply that British administrators were disconnected from native Hong Kong Chinese. HK has long been a beacon of progressive economic and social development in SE Asia along with a heightened awareness of basic standards of behaviour. Famous now for its protests against any threat to their notion of democracy.

Contrast HK over the years with the centuries of under development and now gangsterism and corruption in the ex-Portuguese colony of Macao.

Maybe Italy took in a fair number of the Portuguese Golden Visa Chinese gangsters ? Here in Portugal the Chinese gangsters must get in the queue for counterfeit goods, drug trafficking and extortion. There is a strict heirachy - the main politicians and officers in the Municipals and Fregueisa's get first bite. Supervised by the GNR and PSP to control queue jumping.

Social integration is low between Chinese and everyone else. Partly because of their culture and partly because of their language. I suspect that the Italian police need this kind of help because so few Italian police speak any of the Chinese dialects.

Even among British administrators in Hong Kong, there were few who took the trouble to learn the native language, mainly because it is so difficult.
