Referendum leaflet - why the Government believes the UK should remain in the EU

4801The British Government is providing every household in the UK with a leaflet that sets out why it believes that voting to remain in the EU is the best decision for the UK. It does not offer a balanced view as the Government wants the UK to stay int he Union.

The leaflet, at a cost to the taxpayer of £9.3 million, will be delivered to households in England from 11-13 April, ahead of their local election period and in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland throughout the week commencing 9 May to avoid disruption ahead of their local elections.

For overseas voters, the leaflet is available online.

If you have lived overseas for 15 years or more, you have no vote unless (for reasons that never have been been explained with any degree of logic applied) you are in the British Armed Forces, are a Crown servant or work for the British Council.

If you have been overseas for less than 15 years and have not yet registered to vote you can register by 18 April to vote in the 5 May elections, or by 7 June to vote in the EU referendum on 23 June but for overseas postal votes, apply as soon as possible: the effective date is May 16th.

The leaflet sets out the facts according to current Conservative doctrine, and explains why the government believes a vote to remain in the EU is in the best interests of the people of the UK. It shows some of the choices the UK would face if there were a vote to leave.

Thanks for the link to the Government's propaganda leaflet which I have contributed to financially without consent.
As expected it is largely waffle and "Project Fear" scaremongering with a few random statistics presented so as to mislead. A prime example is this extract: "less than 8% of EU exports come to the UK while 44% of UK exports go to the EU".

This little gem is no doubt true, but it intentionally gives the impression that the UK buys much less from the EU than it sells to other EU countries when, in fact, the UK buys nearly twice what it sells to them. Of course 8% of the EU's entire exports is a good deal more than 44% of the UK's tiny export income, but I don't think many readers would realise this.

I also love the claim that being in the EU encourages foreign investment. Try telling that to employees of Tata.

I suggest that readers of this comment return their leaflet suitably annotated to Mr Cameron for him to review when he gets back from Panama.

Or ask Fred: www.chiptheduck.co.uk/2016/03/18/berts-dilemma/
