Messines - GNR drug patrol nabs on-the-run murderer

handcuffIt appears to be increasingly hard to dupe the Criminal Investigation team of the Silves GNR, especially if you are a prisoner on the run.

On Wednesday, September 13th, a GNR patrol on drug prevention duty which stopped and searched a public bus in São Bartolomeu de Messines, questioned a 45-year-old man and asked for some identification.

The GNR patrol immediately spotted that the ID was fake and detained the man while they made enquiries as to his real identity.

Pedro Abreu Paiva in fact was an escaped prisoner from the Pinheiro da Cruz Prison near Grândola and was subject to an international arrest warrant as he initially had fled to France after escaping.

Members of the GNR finally confirmed his true identity and the fact that he was meant to be serving a 21-year-sentence for murder.

The man was handed over to the guards at Silves prison and soon will be returned to his old cell at the Pinheiro da Cruz Prison prison.

This must surely have resulted from a tip off.

I can't believe the GNR stop and search buses at random.

Good work by them though.
