Lisbon street robberies up 26% in a year

lisbon2There has been a dramatic increase in the number of tourists that have been robbed on the streets of Lisbon with an average of 370 a month registering incidents with local police.

This number of robberies has risen 25.8% this January to April compared to the same period last year.

British passenger airlifted from cruise ship off Portimão

QueenMaryIIAgain Portugal’s Air Force has distinguished itself by successfully airlifting a passenger from a passing cruise ship and taking her without delay to Faro airport.

The 84-year-old Briton was taken by helicopter from Cunard's Queen Mary II as she cruised about 27 miles southeast of Portimão.

Spanish fraud investigation results in 44 arrests

6208aSpanish police arrested 44 people last week on suspicion of being involved in a scam which stole thousands of euros specifically from company bosses.

While 43 of the arrests were made in Spain, one man was arrested in the UK close to an airport where the gang allegedly kept large sums of cash before sending it on to Nigeria.

10 kilometre section of the Algarve's EN125 to close until mid-July - chaos expected

roadworksThe Algarve’s already crammed EN125 is to be cut between Maritenda and Fontainhas, a ten kilometre stretch, due to roadworks.

One reason for the complete closure is to repair the road spanning the Linha do Algarve railway line to the east of Boliqueime with the upgrade work meaning that the Algarve’s busiest section of the so called ‘alternative to the Via do Infante motorway' will be closed to traffic until at least July 15th - right in the height of the tourist season.

The Russian racket in Portugal was uncovered by the Polícia Judiária (PJ) with the support of Europol in an operation codenamed ‘Matrioskas,’ the name for traditional Russian wooden dolls of different sizes that fit inside one another.

Algarve tolls to stay - despite Socialist Party's pre-election promise

5280Parliament has approved a Socialist Party proposal to reduce tolls on four formerly free motorways including the Algarve’s Via do Infante.

No date for the toll reductions has been given nor the level of discount but earlier musings by the governing party  suggested this summer sometime, perhaps, depending on the budget.

Swedish police opt to leave

In 2013, there were 70 officers under the age of 40 who quit. Another 95 left in 2014 while 2015 saw 121 depart from the force.

AeroVIP Dornier loses use of engine in bird strike incident

aeroVIPAn AeroVIP Dornier DO-228 suffered catastrophic damage to an engine as the flight came in to land at Cascais aerodrome.

The bird-strike happened at an altitude of around 100 feet when the aircraft engine was hit by a passing seagull which was sucked into the engine.
