New loan for Faro council in plan to reduce property taxes

farowallFaro council is to ask the government if it may pay off its long-term government loan earlier than planned.

The €16 million loan, organised under the government’s plan to support local councils, could be paid off this year and would be replaced by a new loan on better commercial terms.

It also answers a centuries–old mystery and is what some archaeologists are calling 'one of' the most significant ship-wrecks ever found. 

Referendum voter registration deadline extended after accusations of 'shambles'

8572The deadline for registering to vote in the EU referendum has been extended with the government extending the cut-off point to midnight on Thursday June 9th.

A computer glitch left many unable to sign up before the first deadline on Tuesday night.

Baby born to brain-dead mother

baby2012A baby has been born 15 weeks after his mother has been declared brain dead death. The successful birth is a record for Portugal representing the longest-ever survival of a foetus to a brain-dead mother.

The Lisbon hospital announced that a baby boy, weighing 2.35kg (5lb 3oz), was born after a 32 week pregnancy without complications and by caesarean section.”

Montepio's rating cut to 'junk' status

montepioPortugal's banking sector suffered another humiliating blow today as Moody’s cut its rating for Montepio (Caixa Económica Montepio Geral) by two levels, from B1 to B3.

This means the bank now is categorised as a ‘speculative investment,’ or ‘junk’ and is just one level above being considered a 'substantial debt risk.’

The high street lender is deemed unable to take any shocks to its system, despite a recent capital increase of €270 million.

Portugal ignores European rules on discrimination against Roma communities

The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) has presented its findings on the adoption of recommendations by Portugal since they were introduced in 2013.

Portimão's Arade river to be dredged - but not for cruise ships

powerboatThe minister of all things to do with the sea today decided to authorise the Sines and Algarve Ports Authority to organise dredging in the river Arade in Portimão.

This is not, as many had hoped, to enable large cruise ships to dock in Portimão and kick-start the economic resurgence of the city, but to remove an inconvenient sand bar that has been annoying skippers and which is a danger to the Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship which returns to Portimao on 29 and 31 July.
