Tuesday, 6th of September, was the hottest day this year

6199The 6th of September was the hottest day so far this year in Portugal, according to readings gathered by the Portuguese weather service.

Tuesday the 6th had an average air temperature of 29.2°Celsius, said the IPMA, with the average of maximum temperature (38.6°C - 101.5°F) and minimum (19.8°C) also being the 'highest low' this year to date.

In the last days of August and the first of September there was a heat wave in Northern, Central and Alentejo interior regions, said the institute.

The location of an anticyclone over the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa caused the very hot air that led to the temperature record.

The highest lows in air temperatures were in Vila Real, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Lisbon, Évora, Beja and the Algarve's Vila Real de Santo António.

Temperatures in direct sun and still air conditions showed remarkable highs, in some areas nudging Celcius readings in the high 40s.
