Portuguese construction still in doldrums

buildingsiteThe construction industry in Portugal remains deeply challenged.

Across the eurozone, there was a slight decrease in activity of -0.3% in August compared to August of last year.

The figure encompasses both building construction and civil engineering projects. Building projects were on the increase in the region but civil engineering dropped.

The figure for Portugal was gloomy, having tumbled -6.6% over 2013 which itself could not have been a good year.

This was the greatest decrease of any country in the euro area.

The only glimmer was that after three quarters of dramatic drops in production, there was a slight rally of 1.1% during July and August.

During that year, neighbouring Spain managed a whopping increase in construction of 22%.
