Man arrested in Faro for domestic violence in front of daughter

gnrlogoThe GNR in Faro detained a 48-year-old man who assaulted and threatened his former partner in front of her youngest daughter.

Faro’s GNS said that the man was arrested for domestic violence on Wednesday following an investigation by the Center for Investigation and Victim Support in Faro.

The GNR found that the suspect, "in the presence of his youngest daughter, aged 13, repeatedly assaulted, harassed and threatened the life his 45-year-old wife, as well as controlled all her movements, constantly pursuing her and not accepting the break up."

The GNR applied for an arrest warrant, a search warrant and a vehicle search warrant. A homemade weapon, used to threaten the victim, was seized.

The suspect was detained and will be in court shortly to determine his pre-trial fate.

Good work on the part of the GNR officer that arrested this criminal.
My questions is, how will the GNR handle this case in the light of one of their colleagues being arrested on a similar charge and he got away with a 5 year suspended sentence.
The above will leave the police in a very difficult position as it will be said, a police officer can beat up his wife and family and get away with it, so therefore women and children do not have the law on there side.
This case will be interesting to follow...

As so often pointed out - like so much of the current Portuguese cultural norms - this is at least 30 years late and is, in any case, just the tip of the iceberg. Somebody influential triggered GNR involvement, perhaps an 'important' neighbour disturbed by the constant noise or a relative with connections. Or the man had upset an important local in an unrelated event. How many other Portuguese women and the children in Portugal go through this suffering for years without anyone dare involve the authorities?
