Portimão's Municipal Assembly to vote on 'tourist tax'

portimaoThe Portimão Municipal Assembly is to convene on Friday, November 15, in an extraordinary session to discuss one thing – the Algarve’s tourist tax.

Those in the chamber will discuss and clarify the implementation and implications of the introduction of a tourist tax in the municipality and may decide to vote against the idea.

In September, the mayors’ group, AMAL, decided to approve a proposal to establish a tourist tax to be collected by local hotels and registered accommodation rental businesses.

The mayors might have agreed, with the sane exception of Rosa Palma in Silves, but the Municipal Assemblies also must vote on whether to have the tax, or not.

A study commissioned by the region’s mayors indicated that the maximum amount that could be raised if all of the Algarve’s 16 municipalities decided to implement the tax, was just over €25 million.

Portimão’s proportion of the take could be as much as €3.1 million but the council has no idea how the tax will affect the decision making of potential tourists to its municipal are.
