Baixo Guadiana developing as a birdwatching area

flamingosDonanaThe Odiana association is dedicating a day to the ornithology of the Baixo Guadiana area, starting with a workshop and photography exhibition in the Municipal Library of Vila Real de Santo António.

This will be followed by a field trip to the salt flats of Cerro do Bufo, in Castro Marim, where a rich variety of brid species can be found. The event is on Saturday, 17th November.

The goal is to boost the appeal of bird watching in the Baixo Guadiana area, for locals and tourists.

The workshop takes place between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. with ornithologist Gonçalo Elias who is a founding partner of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) and already has collaborated in eight ornithological guides. Elias also is the author or co-author of fifteen books on the Birds of Portugal.

The exhibition is of the work of Agostinho Gomes, a member of the Association of Amateur Photographers, ‘¼ Escuro,’ whose photographs frequently are used in institutional and private publications, including the ICNF, Councils and SPEA itself.

The field trip starts at 2:30 p.m., taking in the salt marshes, an area where hundreds of species can be found.

Entries for the workshop and for the field trip close on Thursday but can be made by email comunicacao@odiana.pt or by phoning 281 531 1 71.

Odiana currently is working on a guide to Birds of the Baixo Guadiana, with translations in several languages.

The goal is to create an internal and external promotional tool for birdwatching, a growing specialist tourism sector for which the Algarve is ideally placed.
