World’s best tourist destination is... Portugal!

World’s best tourist destination

For the first time in the history of the “Tourism Oscars” World Travel Awards, Portugal has won the title of leading destination.

Following on from Best European Destination glory clinched in October (click here), the country has literally hit the glass ceiling.

As well as taking World’s Leading Destination 2017, Portugal has been distinguished for having the best tourist board (Turismo de Portugal) with the best official tourism site (visitportugal.com), reports RTP following the awards ceremony over the weekend in Phu Quoc, Vietnam.

And then there are the ‘best’ individual categories, like World’s Leading City Break Destination (Lisbon), World’s Leading Conservation Company (Parques de Sintra), World’s Leading Islands Destination (Madeira) and World’s Leading Luxury Leisure Resort (Pine Cliffs, Algarve).

Said Secretary of State for Tourism Ana Mendes Godinho, the success marks a “unique moment for tourism in Portugal”, “recognition for the work that has been developed over the years by everyone connected to tourism”.

But it is also “recognition of the country we have. An authentic, innovative country that knows how to reinvent itself, and brings together a huge variety of experiences and landscapes”.

Portugal combines history, tradition, sun, Nature and gastronomy with a cosmopolitan twist that makes it attractive to everyone, she said.

Now, the way forwards is simply to continue to show “all the diversity that Portugal has to offer”.

Luís Araújo, the jubilant president of Turismo de Portugal stressed that this was the first time also that Portugal has won “prizes of global distinction” - a major motivation to continue consolidating on objectives to keep Portugal at the top of all choices for touristic excellence.

World Travel Awards have been running since 1993. They are chosen by the ‘public in general’, explains RTP, and “more than 200,000 tourism professionals from 160 countries”.

Part of Portugal's recovery from years of austerity can be linked to the significant increase in tourism in most regions of the country, especially in Lisbon and Porto where foreign investment is driven by potential. Those of us that live here and enjoy the benefits of inward investment should support these awards; whoever completes the survey! That being said, the situation with winter tourism in the Algarve needs to be addressed. Swathes of hotels, restaurants and bars closed across the Region and hundreds of guests stranded like hostages in in-all inclusive hotels and resorts. I realise this is a long standing and cyclical matter but it does nothing to create long term sustainability in the sector; even though many of us like the space and calm winter offers!

Quoting Denby:
This is an award for the best "Tourists Destination in the world".
So stop whinging and enjoy the fact that the country that you have chosen to live in... is the greatest country in the world to spend your holidays.

Thats some proclamation. Depends who did all the voting. Probably a plane load of stag weekenders on a bender in Albufeira. They failed to mention best waterslide park, best golf course, best sand pumped beach, best infrastructure network...list could be endless.

I do not welcome these awards. The outcome will be probably that there will be more and more tourists in all corners of Portugal. The country will become more crowded, and prices will inevitably rise.

I agree with Denby, but I just don´t want to share with millions of others.

Wouldn't it be better for Portugal to be going for the all round "Best Place to Establish a new Life and Business in" as well as just this award for "the place to stay overnight"?
Far too many of these surveys are not screened for nationalist bias and the 'Madeline McCann Effect' - we all remember that recent win in a British poll as the "WW2 Flying Ace of Aces" by a hitherto unknown Polish flyer. Swamped by Polish votes - from Poland!
