Brazilian and American tourists spend the most in Portugal

4775Tourists in Portugal spend an average of €96-a-day last year, with the Brazilians and Americans leading this welcome splurge.

Visitors from Brazil have been spending €166-a-day and from the United States, an average of €146-a-day, according to the 2016 figures issued by the National Institute of Statistics in its International Tourism Survey.

Those with the highest spending came here on holiday, 75% of the total spend, while 18% were visiting on work-related trips.

The largest contributors to the €15.3 billion spent in 2016 were from the UK (19.8%), France (12.2%), Spain (10.0%), Germany (9.8%) and Brazil (8.8%).

Visitors from Ireland (€115), Nordic countries (€ 112), Italy (€ 109) and the United Kingdom (€107) spent above average amounts with tourists from within the country spending €89-a-day.

Tourism now accounts for 12.5% ​​of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which corresponds to an increase of 5.8% in 2016.
