Portimão earthquake shakes the Algarve

portimaoA magnitude-3 earthquake struck the Algarve this evening, just after 7pm, with an epicenter about eight kilometres northwest of Portimão, according to the Portuguese weather service.

According to the institute responsible for monitoring seismic activity in Portugal, the shock was felt in a wide area and reported by several people on social media.

People as far away as Aljezur, Olhão, Faro, Albufeira, Silves and Messines posted that they too experienced the shaking.

The seismic data shows the earthquake was located at 37.20 degrees latitude and -8.60 degrees longitude, at a depth of 20 kilometres, measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale.
 
There is no record of material damage or injury.
