A nine-metre minke whale was photographed around 400 metres off the coast of Albufeira, near Oura beach. The massive mammal was caught on camera by a crew member of the Ski Molhado boat trip company on Friday (July 24).
“This species is frequently found in our waters, but not this close to the shore as it is shy,” Élio Vicente, marine biologist from Zoomarine, told Correio da Manhã.
“It may have been resting near the coast or looking for food,” he suggested.
This species of whale is known for being curious despite shy, and is known to approach ships, sometimes even keeping up with moving vessels.

And Greenpeace rightly battles them in the Antartic.
So now look out for boat loads of Japanese restauranteurs heading out to sea off Albufeira.
Which reminds of Cecil the Lion. Lured out of a safe reserve he had been in for 13 years in Zimbabwe and then cross bowed. A lion used to having humans nearby - having a radio collar from a UK university for years - so a soft target. Taking 40 hours to die - exhausted and grievously pained.
Let us hope the idiot US dentist and the team involved in the killing of Cecil also now suffer. Scum.
