Spanair goes bust
- Created on Saturday, 28 January 2012 09:54
Financial problems have sunk loss-making Spanair as 380 domestic and international flights with the Barcelona-based firm have been cancelled.
Catalonia’s regional government is the main shareholder and says it can no longer provide funds. The last-ditch attempt to sell the failing carrier to Qatar Airways has also failed.
Spanair ground staff have walked out at Barcelona airport leaving some passengers flightless and without their luggage that had been checked through. No alternative flights have been offered.
Spain's jobless has grown overnight by 3,500 direct and related posts adding to the highest rate in nearly 17 years, over five million.
