Commies call for parliamentary visit to Algarve's creaking health service

hospitalchartThe parliamentary group of the Communist Party of Portugal (PCP) today has proposed that the Parliamentary Health Committee actually visits the Algarve before the next legislative session which starts on September 15th.

"The healthcare provided to the Algarve's population, both in terms of hospital care, and in terms of primary care, has deteriorated over the years as a result of the policy pursued by successive governments’ attacks on the National Health Service," according to a statement from the party.

The PCP added that the situation in the region has worsened "sharply" since the decision taken a year ago by the current government to force the merger of hospitals in Faro, Portimão and Lagos to be managed by the new Algarve Hospitals Centre run by Dr Pedro Nunes who the majority of his staff find confrontational and lacking in empathy.

"The PCP believes that the dire state of the National Health Service in the Algarve fully justifies the Health committee to travel to the region," emphasises the Communist parliamentary group.

The proposed agenda includes a visit to Portimão Hospital, a meeting with the board of the Hospital of the Algarve, a visit to the health center in Olhão and a meeting with the executive director of the Health Centers Algarve, and a visit to the Basic Emergency Centre in Loulé and with their respective managements.

This proposal now will not even be debated until September with the chances of a committee visit beforehand only a vague possibility, but at least the Comunists have been seen to add their opinion to a largely non-existant debate.

As you rightly point out, Editor, the PCP has left its request to a time and date at which it will not be heeded. Typically for an opposition party, the PCP makes no alternative proposals.
