Madeira's airport renamed in honour of its favourite son

RonaldoBustSmallA bust of Cristiano Ronaldo was unveiled on Wednesday in the newly named airport in Madeira, becoming a social media sensation for all the wrong reasons.

Even the sculptor commented that “Not even Jesus pleased everyone," as the online criticism of the approximation of the football star’s image reverberated across cyberspace.

The statue was presented to the public as part of the celebrations this week that saw Madeira’s airport renamed 'Aeroporto Internacional da Madeira, Cristiano Ronaldo.'

Sculptor, Emanuel Santos, said that he has not taken any of the criticism personally, “It's impossible to please the Greeks and the Trojans. Not even Jesus pleased everyone," said the sculptor.

"There is always the possibility of producing something that looks different, I was already prepared for that. I used some photos of Cristiano Ronaldo that I found on the internet as a base, not one photo specifically. I put the photos by my side and started working on the bust," which perhaps explains the rather bizarre looking offering which took 15 days to produce.

Ronaldo, if taken aback at his likeness, was gentleman enough not to comment in the negative, despite uncontrolled giggling from the footballer and politicians when the bust was unveiled.

Appalling piece of artwork. Looks more like the golfer JUSTIN ROSE.
