New Caixa Geral CEO’s salary will be the same as outgoing Domingues

healthministerThe future CEO of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Paulo Macedo, will keep the vastly enhanced salary negotiated by outgoing António Domingues, despite the political pressure of the last few days on the Government to revert to the lower salary level of Domingues’ predecessor.

The government took this decision despite the need to negotiate a salary that would avoided further tension.

António Domingues had negotiated an annual salary of €423,000, plus a variable bonus of up to 50% depending on the results achieved. He lasted less than three months.

Now that Domingues has gone, resigning over his continued refusal to lodge his tax and asset statements, the Left Bloc and the Communist Party both say that the Government should have taken this opportunity to negotiate the lower salary level for his successor that should not be more than that of the prime minister.

The Social Democratic opposition party also has criticised the pay level of the new Caixa Geral CEO, arguing that the salary should be the same or lower than the salary of the prime minister, or one that is authorised by the Minister of Finance at an amount equal to the average of the last three years in the last position occupied.

An opportunity has been lost for Macedo to look good and the government to be seen to have a grip on this State-owned bank.

A golden opportunity lost indeed. I remember when I closed my account with CGD they charged me 16 euros for the pleasure. Well worth it I said. Most unpleasant staff to deal with, one lady even left me in mid air and went for lunch, without even telling me, she just left me waiting at the counter. No wonder Portugal is the tail of Europe, no business acumen at all. Such a pity as it is a lovely country.
