Former Health Minister to be the next president of Caixa Geral de Depósitos

healthministerPaulo Macedo may be the next president of Caixa Geral de Depósitos. The former health minister, between June 2011 and October 2015, in the Pedro Passos Coelho government is likely to be appointed the new president of Caixa Geral on Friday December 2nd.

Macedo has been invited by the Government to take on the top job at Caixa Geral after the departure of António Domingues who, along with members of his board, refused to submit tax and asset statements as is normal for those in significant positions in State-run companies.

Prime Minister, António Costa, already has said that the name of the next president of the public bank would be known by the end of the week.

If there are no last minute changes, Paulo Macedo’s name will be forwarded to the European Central Bank for clearance.

After the dismal, but thankfully brief three month period in which António Domingues was in charge of the State bank, the Government has reverted to appointing a politician rather than a banker to handle the presidency and to see Caixa Geral through a critical refinancing.

Diário de Notícias reports that Paulo Macedo refused a first invitation from the Government but that he later was persuaded to take on the role. Whether his salary will be at the old level, or at the significantly higher 'public sector' level negotiated by Domingues for himself and his 'dream team' of directors, remains to be seen.

Macedo may best be remebered as a politician but his business credentials are long and impressive, graduating in Business Organisation and Management from the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG), the Technical University of Lisbon (1986), and completing the Advanced Business Management Programme at AESE Business School, Lisbon (2001).

Paulo José Ribeiro Moita de Macedo was Vice-Chairman of the Banco Comercial Português (BCP) Executive Board of Directors (2008–2011), and non executive Vice-Chairman of several companies in the BCP Group (April–June 2011). He was also a Member of the Supervisory Board of Bank Millennium (Poland) (2008–2011) and a Member of the Supervisory Board of Euronext (2010–2011).

After serving as Director-General of Taxation and Chairman of the Tax Administration Board (2004–2007), he returned to the Banco Comercial Português.

Macedo also is a former Member of the Executive Board of Seguros e Pensões (2003–2004), of the Board of Directors of Médis, Companhia Portuguesa de Seguros de Saúde, SA (2001–2004), of the Board of Directors of Interbanco (2000–2001) and of the Board of Directors of Comercial Leasing (1998–2000).

Are banking and business quite the same thing?

Quoting Margaridaana:
What can a Health Minister possibly know about running a bank? Suggestions please?

I think his CV shows he has wide business administrative experience. His tenure as Health Minister was but a short distraction from his business life.
