Portugal leads European divorce rate

churchOf every 100 marriages in Portugal, 70 end in divorce, according to a study by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation.

The report, published for European Statistics Day on October 20th, showed Portugal had beaten off the opposition to lead the field in marital disharmony.

According to the director of Pordata, whose data was used in the Foundation’s findings published in ‘Portrait of Portugal in Europe,’ Maria João Valente Rosa said the number of divorces would be decreasing because there have been fewer marriages.

In 2012, the ratio of marriages to divorces in Portugal was even higher: 73.7 per 100 marriages.

Portugal is closely followed by Denmark in marital break-ups, with neighbouring Spain lagging behind in fifth place.

The Portuguese also are eschewing the Catholic Church as the number of Catholic marriages has declined.

In 2013, there were 19,920 civil marriages and 11,576 Catholic ones, while in 2000 there were 22,421 civil marriages and over 41,000 Catholics unions.

Nearly half of children were born out of wedlock in Portugal in 2013, 49.3%, leaving Portugal in fifth place behind the leader, Bulgaria, where nearly 60% of children are born to unmarried mothers.
