Project 12 - A Global Art & Photography Project Inspiring Peace and Environmental Awareness. Pauline McCarthy's idea is to make an artistic historical record of 2012 in 12 moments, which could also inspire peace and encourage environmental awareness.

'Born in Glasgow in 1960, into a family of Irish heritage and culture, I have always been fascinated by different cultures, religions, customs, foods, festivals, music and languages. I have observed that although we come from diverse cultures, we as humans have many things in common, the most important being Mother Earth our common home.

On the 8. 8. 2008, because of the date, I began to contemplate numerology and its effects on the various cultures around the world. Eventually I realised that the year 2012 was unique. All years have 12 months but only that year out of the whole century also ended with the number 12. An opportunity like this only arrives once in a lifetime. How could I use this amazing conflagration of the number 12 to help unite the world, a lifetime desire of mine.

As an artist and the believer in the possibility of creating a better world, the idea to make an artistic historical record of 2012 in 12 moments, which could also inspire peace and encourage environmental awareness, came about.

I am asking people around the world to take photographs or make art on the 12th of each of the 12 months in 2012 and upload them to the Project 12 website www.2012project12.com

There have been many predictions about the year 2012 from the Mayan calendar “end of the world” to great changes in mankind with the coming of the Age of Aquarius. We also see the rise of the 99%, environmental groups and other worldwide movements instigating great changes. I believe that 2012 will herald in a new era of great change for mankind. What better reasons to make an historical record of the year!

Project 12 has 4 categories:

12:12:12  – a record of the mystical year 2012 from your perspective.

Peace 12 – Art and photography inspiring World Peace.

Gaia 12 – Art and photography encouraging environmental awareness.

A Study of 12 – Highlight your passion or favourite things with an example of one each month.

To make it more fun there will be prizes in each category with the Grand Prize a trip for 2 to Iceland for a week, where I will be your personal guide. I look forward to seeing entries from your part of the world.'
