New Micro Generation Law

The new micro-generation law for grid connected Photovoltaic (PV) solar systems in Portugal were released in February 2011 and the news is very positive.
The new legislation will provide a fixed rate of 38 cents / KWh for the first 8 years followed by 22 cents / KWh for the following 7 years thereby giving guaranteed rates for 15 years!
The maximum capacity of system to sell back to EDP at these rates will be 3,68 KW for residential properties or 11.04 KW for condominiums. The PV systems can either be fixed type (mounted on a roof or on the land with a support structure) or tracker type (motorized to follow the sun´s path).
Return on investment can be made in about 8 years which makes real financial sense bearing in mind the rates are guaranteed for 15 years and the solar panels carry warranties up to 25 years!
It is important to act quickly though to maximize pay back because:
1. The rate of IVA is expected to increase next year
2. The feed in tariffs will reduce year on year
