Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is a picturesque fishing village that over the years has become a tourist favourite. Carvoeiro has a fun town centre surrounded by expensive villas, comfortable holiday apartments and golf courses. To the east is the small and attractive village of Porches that dates back to the Roman period. Unfortunately, the earthquake of 1755 destroyed its ancient castle and also the original 16th century parish church.
Carvoeiro's beaches are featured on many picture postcards of the Algarve, although they are cove-like in size and not all are easy to access.
Fishing boats still land on the main beach in the early morning to off load their catch. Some believe evidence can be spotted of Roman occupation in the some of the old walls in the back streets.
Nearby Sesmarias has plentiful accommodation for peak season stays in Carvoeiro. Well worth a visit out of town is the lighthouse - not so much for the lighthouse itself but for the amazing blow holes that surround it.These are huge holes (fenced off for safety) that have been worn in the rock over the many years, and when a strong tide comes, water explodes high into the air.
