Carrapateira
- Written by Come to Portugal
Carrapateira on the west coast is a small village set within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, which is a protected area of national beauty. International surfing competitions are held in the area and the several bars in the village often cater for the surfing population along with a couple of good restaurants known for fresh grilled fish.
The village has a municipal market for fresh produce, along with shops which sell surfing equipment. The school building has a parapet-type wall, a style that is common in most older school houses in the Algarve.
The remains of a privately owned windmill with wooden sail structure can be seen, but it is not open to the public.
It is a good stop off place to meet up with other surfers, or just watch the world go by with a coffee or beer where you might also find some of the artist who work in the village.
