Burgau
- Written by Come to Portugal
Burgau is a small village close to the west coast of the Algarve, sometimes thought of as the Algarve’s version of Cornwall in England. It is a picturesque village touching the Atlantic Ocean, where fishermen can still be seen repairing nets and lobster pots. The village is on steep hills, with a number of stairs, and its many, and often narrow, streets are cobbled.
The beach area resembles a cove surrounded by large cliffs, nicely sheltered and with golden sand. Tides can cover most of the beach, as well as the nearby parking area, although there is also plenty of parking at the top of the village. Parking for disabled people is available at both sites.
Atomik is one such place that has a very modern theme and very clean. A bit further alone is a large hotel with restaurant behind a colonial frontage; it was used in the filming of One Foot in the Algarve (part of the BBC's One Foot in the Grave series in the 1990s).
Overall the village is one of much charm with many whitewashed cottages and townhouses and offers many quality gift shops and mini supermarkets.
